The dynamic nature of tourism requires ongoing research, and the course is structured in a manner that transcends disciplinary boundaries in order to present you an integrated and holistic approach to the study of tourism based on recent knowledge and research. It will consider the various social, economic, political and cultural vectors that influence tourism, understand the interactions between these, whilst framing major issues and debates concerning the impact of tourism within a broader context of environmental, social, economic and cultural sustainability. The inter and intra-disciplinary broad approach adopted by Tourism Studies, is far more flexible in its outlook, and draws on relevant subject areas as necessary. Tourism is definitely an industry of the future. Growth means that more and more professionals are needed all over the world. The B.A. (Hons) in Tourism Studies provides the student with the required skills and knowledge to be a part of this growth.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

Applicants who are in possession of a qualification comprising not less than 60 ECTS credits classified at Level 5 on the Malta Qualifications Framework, in an area of study related to Hospitality Management or Tourism Studies, may be admitted to Year 2 of the Course under those conditions as the Board may impose.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Bachelor of Arts (Honours)(Tourism Studies) - B.A. (Hons)(Tourism Studies) - under the auspices of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.

In addition to the prescribed 60 ECTS credits for the year, students can apply to the Board to register for the extra study-unit listed hereunder. Extra study-units cannot substitute compulsory, elective or optional study-units that form part of the official Senate-approved programme of studies, and do not count towards the Year Average Mark or towards the Final Weighted Average Mark.

As a graduate of the B.A. (Hons) in Tourism Studies, you will be uniquely furnished with a sound grounding in various aspects of the tourism industry, together with an understanding of the social, economic, and cultural frameworks that are so crucial to tourism management and planning. You will thus be ideally placed to join professional ranks in addressing the vibrant demands of the industry.

The focus of undergraduate business degrees is to equip you with a wide range of transferable skills to broaden your employment opportunities. Employers are interested in the transferable skills that you will possess, such as analytical and critical thinking, problem solving, strong interpersonal and communication, alongside an understanding of organisational behaviour and structures. These indicate strong potential for future development in prospective employees. The tourism specialisation of this undergraduate programme encourages you to focus on developing the skills that can be valuable for roles such as: Business Manager, Hotel Manager, Travel Consultant, Sales Manager, Business Development Executive, Marketing Executive, Operations Manager, Tour Manager, Travel Agency Manager, Event Organiser, Travel Administrator, Cultural Programme Manager, Heritage Development Manager.

You will also have the option of pursuing full-time or part-time courses at Master level, either with the University of Malta or at universities abroad. Courses offered by the Institute for Tourism, Travel and Culture include the M.Sc. in Tourism Development and Culture, the M.A. in Tourism [by research], M.A. in International Hospitality and Tourism Experience Management, and the M.A. in Tourism and Culture.
